The Boy who Needed Help
I waited anxiously in my seat. I was ready to shake hands with my assessment paper.
“Number 16” the teacher called. I got up from my seat. I flipped over my paper immediately. 90
marks! That’s not too bad. I was checking my mistakes when I heard a sob behind me. I turned
around so quickly my neck hurt. What I saw nearly made me cry out--- my best friend Nick
was crying! I bent over him and whispered, “What’s wrong?” Nick said nothing, but shoved me
his assessment paper. 45 marks! That’s a fail! I froze, but an idea suddenly dawned on me. I
smiled and whispered to Nick, “I will help you. Check your e-mail tonight.” I left Nick with
confused thoughts.
When I arrived home, I turned on my computer. I started typing. I saved it and sent it to
Nick. “See attached. 1st recess, classroom.” The description read. I printed out a hard copy.
My work was done.
The next day at first recess, I met up with Nick and said, “Let’s do it together. You know
why.” Nick smiled at me and began to write. The cycle of revision with self-made exercises went
on for months, and not only Nick’s knowledge was getting better, so was mine.
In the blink of an eye, the assessment for the third term had arrived. After the teacher
announced, “You may start now”, I peeked over my shoulder and saw Nick smiling as he wrote.
On the day when the assessment was given out, my assessment paper had “95” written on
the corner. Just then, Nick passed me a piece of paper. “91”, it read.
Without realising, I was helped by the boy who needed help.
