A Detective Story
4B Chang Cheuk Yu
One day on a very different Earth where only rich people ruled, Detective Ruby was called
to the Mayor's mansion. Walking up to the mansion, her long curly auburn hair fanned out in the
wind and her sapphire-blue eyes sparkled at the prospect of a new mystery. Inside the mansion,
no one was there apart from a woman and a man huddled together. The woman was crying.
Unfortunately, the beautiful sight inside the mansion was not enough to cheer the woman up.
After calling in all of the witnesses, Detective Ruby quickly interviewed them. The maid
said she was cleaning at around 4:30 in the morning (Yes, that's how early she wakes up) when
she heard a scream. She only found a black mask on the bed of the Mayor's daughter. The
Mayor's wife said that she heard footsteps going to her daughter's room but she dismissed the
thought since she thought it was her husband, and fell back asleep. A woman, called Jessica,
saw a man dressed completely in black carrying a large black sack in his arms, running across
the street and hopping into a van, when she was jogging past the mansion this morning.
After a short period of investigation, Detective Ruby found out that one of the security guards at the
mansion went missing a few nights ago as well. Using a GPS, she was able to track down the security
guard's phone. She arrived at a what-seemed-to-be abandoned house in the countryside. As she
walked in, she felt two hands grabbing her shoulders and trying to pull her backwards. Instinctively, she
grabbed the two hands and threw the person on the ground. Then, before the person could regain his
balance, she instantly hit the person in the back of the neck and he fell unconscious. She then tied him
up and quickly called the police and the distraught parents. After regaining consciousness, the man was
revealed to be the security guard who went missing a few nights ago. He said, “So what? I would have
sold her to the black market if it weren’t for you.” He glared at Detective Ruby and she returned it with
a cunning grin. “If you want your daughter back so badly, fine, she's in the basement,” he snorted at the
Mayor and his wife. The crying mother raced down the steps to the basement with practically inhuman
power. (Remember, kids, your mother is scarier than any monsters on Earth when she's mad.) The
family reunited in tears of joy. Also, Ruby got a pay rise and an extra one million dollars from the Mayor.
A while later, when Ruby was enjoying her usual cappuccino, she got a phone call from her boss.
“There's been a break-in on the jewelry shop on Blossom Ave. Come immediately.” Ruby rolled her eyes
and sighed. “Not again...” she muttered.
