My Own Place

4R3 Ng Sze Wing

I am a polar bear living in the Arctic Circle. I am not a social animal, but I always
live with my friends - Mary and Ben. We always stay together, e.g fishing,
eating, sleeping … so our bond is very strong, more than anything else.

However, after a few days, a tragedy occurred, something that we all could
not expect.

On that day, I was still asleep. Suddenly, I felt like floating in the sea. I

immediately opened my eyes and looked at the nearby environment. There
was only Ocean ice drifting towards the glacier. I thought they were very
worried about me. So I jumped into the sea and swam to the glacier, which I
said was not far away.

After a while, I finally swam to the glacier and see my friends again. “Mary and
I did not mean to let you down, but you were so tired that we could not wake
you up. So we came here first, watching you from here carefully. Luckily you

have not been washed away by the sea and you wake up in time,” said Ben.

I felt very lucky when I heard this because my friends and I could observe the
melting of the glaciers which saved our lives. Some of our companions lost

their lives, and we all felt very sad. In recent years, the climate had become
hotter and hotter, and glaciers had been melting more rapidly. Our family had
been dying since our habitat was becoming smaller and thus hunting was also
very difficult. Human hunting had led to the extinction of polar bears in some

regions.
