Music-making Amid Social-distancing

COVID-19 might have taught us about keeping social distance from each other, but it did not stop us from learning and making
music together! The online platforms, Google Classroom and Zoom, helped students to acquire music knowledge and play music
together even though they were all at their individual homes.

The Music Google Classrooms for S.1, S.2 and S.3 have been updated once a cycle since the beginning of the 2 Term. It was a great
opportunity for students to conduct self-directed learning as they were required to watch short videos and read lesson materials on
their own throughout the class suspension period. Every cycle, students had to complete a short quiz after acquiring knowledge of
a certain music topic.

During the class suspension period, we had music lessons
using the Zoom app. Ms. Chan always showed her face and
would join us in the singing. We started with listening to
music details and understanding the story of the song. Then
we learnt the song by reading and singing the lyrics, line by
line together. When we were using the Zoom app, we were
more confident to sing. Maybe it was because we did not
need to sing directly face to face. It was good for us to learn the songs in a more relaxed way.

Because of the coronavirus, we had a new approach to have our trumpet lessons. Every week I had
a one-on-one trumpet lesson with Mr. Jim Ho Ming for half an hour. It was a rare opportunity as it is
usually very expensive to have lessons like this. We often play in groups during lessons at school, but
now Mr. Jim taught me individually in order to perfect my techniques. I think using Zoom was a great
choice and I have really made progress in my playing.

I am thankful to Ms. Chan for arranging the complicated schedule of all sorts of instrumental
classes during the suspension period. I also love how Ms. Chan built up the musical
atmosphere by singing with us in the Zoom music lessons. It was very interesting to sing
and listen to many of us trying to harmonise together.
