Why Deer Have Horns
4D Chan Sze Yu
Long, long time ago, there was a beautiful forest where horn-less deer
lived. There’s enough food and water for them, but they all lived a miserable
life. The forest was also where the fierce beasts like tigers and bears lived.
Most of the deer were killed by the beasts but
they could not do anything about it.
One young deer called Sika often hid from
the beasts that tried to eat or hurt her. One day,
she was hiding under an old oak tree to escape
from a tiger. Suddenly, the tree asked Sika in a
caring voice, “Little deer, why are you sad?” The
deer looked up at the tree’s eyes. She sighed
and replied, “I was chased by a big, scary tiger.
Would you help me?” Sika asked hopefully.
The tree sighed. But he wanted to help Sika badly. He lent her two twigs
and stuck them on her forehead. “Those are horns,” the tree said, “they’ll
protect you,” Sika was over the moon as she screamed and squealed with
glee. “They’ll look fantastic!” she thought. Sika ran away happily but stopped
for a moment to bow in thanks to the tree.
As soon as Sika got the horns, she was not afraid of the beasts anymore.
They would be scared off by her horns. Soon, the news spread and every deer
stuck twigs on their forehead. Slowly the twigs turn into horns.
That’s the reason why deer have their big, beautiful horns
