As I mentioned previously, the first source of stress is from students’
parents. They give a lot of pressure to their children. Hong Kong is a
competitive society. Parents force their kids to study hard to ensure them to
have a good job and have a stable income when they finish school.
Secondly, academic stress is another stress that many students suffer
from. Many schools especially prestigious schools’ teachers always hand out
plenty of homework to students. They would feel stressed because they do
not have enough time to handle all homework and projects. Not only in Hong
Kong, other countries like Britain and USA, hundreds of students committed
suicide because of academic stress. According to a survey done by a local
university, 60% of the students tried to commit suicide due to poor results or
excessive homework.
Lastly, it is peer pressure. If students do not conform to the group or individuals, they
will get bullied. They may not have friends or be bullied by peers.
In my opinion, I strongly suggest that parents should give their children more
time to relax. Joining extra-curricular activities instead of tutorial classes is
a good idea. In this way, students can participate in their favourite activities
leisurely. They can relax and enjoy.
In conclusion, many students suffer from stress and the major reasons
are from families and schools. Teachers and social workers can provide
counselling for those students who are in need. Moreover, students should
have more spare time and join more school-organised activities to help relieve
stress.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Wong
