Teen health at school
5B (21) Tong Shun Kai
Many students at school have suffered from stress. According to a recent
survey conducted by the Student Union, it shows that 70% of the students
at our school suffer from stress. It shows that stress is common at school.
There are a few major reasons why students suffer from stress. The most
typical one is students need to have good results to meet parents’
expectations. If students cannot meet their expectations, they may be
punished. Students are also busy to prepare tests given by teachers but they
do not have enough time. They may feel stressed too.
Stress is a feeling that anyone can have when they are overloaded. Although
stress seems bad for us, short term stress can be helpful because it helps
the body prepare for the difficulties and dangers ahead. When people face a
challenge, parts of our responses are physical such as breathing faster. In a
psychological way, it causes a higher blood pressure and pulse, and muscles
become tense too.
Stress to me is like motivation. When I studied in primary school, a classmate
challenged with me for better exam results in the reading paper. I accepted
his challenge and started working harder. I practised more seriously then
I achieved my goal. Although stress can become a strong motivator, it can
lead to depression. I nearly suffered from depression when I was young. My
parents forced me to study at home alone for a week. I was anxious and tired.
I cried all the time. After that, my parents took me to the doctor and I was fine
after a year of treatment.
