Overcoming hurdles
Being away from family for five days, what did they do when they missed their family? Writing a letter to their parents!
Could they call their parents instead? No. One major camp rule was that all participants were not allowed to use
mobile phones. Most of them expressed that they felt uneasy without a smart phone. What could they do to overcome
this desire? The answer was surprisingly simple – real interaction with peers.
Since the physical activities were demanding and energy draining, Smart Teen members did feel frustrated at some
times on the first two days. This was especially true when they had to live up to the expectation of the firefighting
instructors. In the face of adversity, Smart Teen members showed a positive attitude and behavioural change
eventually. They even began to genuinely enjoy life in the academy. It was so much fun to hike along the trials of High
Junk Mountain in Tseung Kwan O.
Full support from all stakeholders
To ensure that Smart Teen participants would never feel alone while receiving disciplinary training, a team of KTGSS
teachers visited them on the 4th day of the camp to listen to their stories. On the last day, these firefighting cadets
marched in unison in their passing-out parade to share the fruits of learning with their instructors, parents, teachers
and fellow schoolmates. This magical journey has seemingly come to an end, yet the seeds sown will definitely be
beneficial to all their future encounters.
