As a Wa Yinger, what makes me proud to this day, is that my alma mater not only nurtures us to excel in academic performances,
but also offers us the best opportunities to grow into an all-round person, which I have benefited from and forever grateful for.
I found it remarkably eye-opening when entrusted by my schoolmates and the school in organising inter-school activities. Unlike
organizing internal school activities, dealing at the inter-school level requires very different skills and capabilities, like addressing
unique concerns from respective schools with sensitivity, appreciating the structures of different student unions to get the job
done, complying with the accounting procedures with regard to financial matters, and the etiquette and rules of engagement
in corresponding with other school representatives. I remember in the Joint School Singing Contest, through negotiations
and compromises we found a creative alternative to our original budget, effectively reducing our stage equipment costs with
assistance from the Wa Ying backstage crew. Such problem-solving skill has prepared me to be adaptive and communicative in
the future work place.
The teacher advisors of Student Union offered me much independence to embark on new initiatives in the inter-school activities.
Such strong backing has made me dare to speak up and offer solutions to the problems with my team independently. During the
process, I could learn to strike the delicate balance between the trust placed in me and the independence
granted on one hand, and the practical concerns from the school when putting our new initiatives in
action, with the timely advice from my teacher advisors. With the responsibilities on my shoulders,
I have learnt to cope with situations with diverse opinions and to calmly carry on in a stressful
environment.
Besides school activities, various external ‘life planning’ activities recommended by my teacher
have also enriched my secondary school life. Speaking of my experience in the MTR “Train
Your Life Journey” camp, in participating in team-building activities like circle-painting and
night-hiking, I gained a fresh perspective on my career planning through honest sharing
with new friends, social workers and staff of the MTR company. Participating in external
activities provides practical tips that further echoes with what I have learnt in Wa Ying, such
as ascribing my strength into my life goals and pursuits, and that have immensely shaped my
future study and career goals.
