王學文 Mathematics 5**

Despite the fact that I have great grades in mathematics, it occurs to
most people that I was not even the top ten in Form 6 and my rank was
dropping when it was getting closer to the HKDSE. So what changed all
            that?

Before the questions of ‘how’, ‘what’ or ‘when’, the most crucial question
yet most forgotten question to ask is – ‘WHY’? Committing without a reason
is like burning paper, you cannot persist for long. Why don’t you put down
your pen, sit back for a moment and think of the reason? It will be worth the time. It doesn’t have to be fancy reasons like
saving the world or curing cancer, which can’t theoretically be cured yet. What did George Mallory say when asked why
he climbed Mount Everest? ‘Because it’s there.’ These mere three words made him succeeded in breaking through the
limit of mankind. For me, I just simply didn’t want to lag behind. So I challenged myself to surpass the top student in our
form. Even though I still lost, I had outdone myself. So try to find yourself a reason.

It is really true that everyone needs different learning styles. But one thing
for sure, never daydream until you learn something new from your lessons. Why
study later when you can understand the concepts during the lessons? It is really
the smartest way to learn at lessons as it is the fastest and that’s what lessons
are for, right? When you hit the bottle neck, test yourself with a few papers and
congratulations, you’re getting started. However, if you want to get high grades,
never let yourself learn nothing even for a day.

When asked why I sometimes played games during and before the exam, I
always give them two answers. First, I paid attention during lessons. Second, I need
to relieve stress. Remember, choose your own style and maintain a balance between
effort and effect. For me, I didn’t work hard until my study leave, which was a bit late,
to be honest. Yet, when the study leave came, I gave up playing games. The only
thing I could do was to study till I really understood how it worked. If I couldn’t, I just
memorized it. When you still have time, it is never too late to try out different styles.

                                                                                                                   10
