梁穎潼 Candice Leung English 5
Hi everyone! I am Candice from class 6E this year. I’m delighted to be invited to write a little
message to my schoolmates. I was awarded Level 5 in HKDSE English and Level 5** in English
Speaking. I am really thrilled to get such a result! I would like to share a bit of my experience and
advice to my schoolmates on learning English and overcoming obstacles on the learning journey.
You may think English is deep and difficult. I agree, because it is so true! Learning English, a
language new to you and far different from your mother tongue, is as difficult as forcing a foreigner
to learn Chinese. Anyway, the reality that we all have to accept is that we are all required to be in a competition and
ultimately we have no choice and can never quit. So, the only thing that we can do is to learn to play the game wisely,
getting the greatest profit with the lowest cost.
Learning a language, without a doubt, is time-consuming. The only way to do well
is to submerge yourself in the world of English. In other words, fall in love with English.
Through whichever way: music, drama, movies or books, find something in English that
can attract you, that you are interested in, that you are passionate about. Build the sense
of English and eventually everything will become easier. Here is a tip for you guys, if
you would like to find something in English that is interesting, TED Talk should be your
choice. You can find whatever topic you are interested in, such as science, astronomy,
psychology etc. Through TED Talk, you can build up your sense of English and most
importantly, your listening and oral presentation skills that you might need in your SBA
and examinations. TED Talk is a great learning partner on your English learning journey.
As the old saying goes, “Practice makes perfect”. But for me, “Practice makes progress” is a more accurate
statement. We can never see the end of the sea of knowledge. However, if you can adhere to continual practice
every day, like reading a news passage or memorizing new vocabulary, you can see your improvement soon. You will
experience less powerlessness when dealing with English. People are always curious, asking me how I could improve
my English speaking accent. My answer: simply listen and speak more. That’s all.
However, I believe that most importantly, teachers, classmates and your family must be your strongest backup team.
I believe that all of us must have obstacles that make us feel exhausted or in despair, especially for secondary school
students. We face great pressure and we bear the expectations of people whom we love and care. I understand that it
must be really tough. But remember, there is also someone behind you who will love to give you support, listen to you
when you need them and try their best to assist you. You are never alone. Just like me, I gained support from my lovely
teachers and my family. They made me calm and focused in working hard, helping me strive for better results in my
HKDSE. So, you might feel stressful in studying but never feel helpless or hopeless.
Dear schoolmates, I am not an expert and I am not sure if my suggestions are useful or if my ideas are inspiring. But
I still hope my advice can light somebody’s way. Don’t give yourself a chance to regret. Start today, try your very best to
strive for better academic results and to chase your dream. Good luck!
