A Speech To Promote Reading
                                                 3B Sunny Luk Wing Hong

             Good morning Principal, teachers and
fellow students. Today, I’m very pleased to
share with you why reading is good for us.
In the school, not many schoolmates
have developed a reading habit. I think it
is because we do not have enough time to
read. Many of us think reading is boring.
But no matter what excuses we have, we should spare time reading because
reading can really bring us a lot of benefi ts.
I’m sure you will agree with me that reading can help us relax. If I have some
troubles, I will read a book. Reading is a good way to help me forget my troubles or
pressure of learning. For example, in last year’s exam, I was under a lot of pressure.
So I read a book to relax myself. You can also read some good magazines at your
leisure. There are different topics of books in the library, such as astronomy, sea
animals, making friends and sports. I’m sure you can choose some interesting
books if you can spare more time looking for the right ones. I think reading is a good
way to relax because when you are reading, you will forget all things. Reading is a
          pleasant experience.
Another benefit is obvious: reading can
help the growth of vocabulary and help us
improve our English. Also, books can show
us the use of grammar and expressions of
thinking. We can learn from other people
how to write a good passage. The more you
read, the more words you will know. There
is no question about that. I think this is the
biggest benefi t for our learning. Reading is like
eating. Without eating, we can’t grow healthily.
Without reading, we can’t learn well.
Then how do we foster a reading habit? The fi rst tip is we need to fi nd books of
our interest. For example, if you like sports, you can read books about your favourite
sport. If you want to know how to make friends, you can borrow books about how
to improve friendships. If you like animals, then read books about different kinds of
Helen Liang Memorial Secondary School (Shatin)
animals and their habitats. The second tip is you need to fi nish reading one book
as soon as possible. Don’t take it so long to read it, or else this will make you bored
and kill your passion for reading. If you fi nd a book not interesting to read, choose
another one. Ke ep reading. You can read books while you are waiting for the MTR
or bus or even on your rides. Gradually, reading will become your habit.
Reading is like eating. It can help us relax and learn better. They say, “Today a
reader, tomorrow a leader”. I hope all of us can read a book every week. Thank you
for listening. Have a nice day!
