A day I will never forget

in my primary school life

I will never forget the day when I first came to this school.

I had spent one year studying in the school in Mainland China, so I
was scared and curious about the school life in Hong Kong. I had a big
problem. I couldn’t understand what the Hong Kong people were saying.
I was afraid of it. I never said anything because I was afraid they would
laugh at me.

However, a girl talked to me and she was using Putonghua. I was
so surprised. We became friends quickly. She was my first friend in this
school. When we had lessons, I couldn’t understand what my teacher
said. I was asking my friend for help while my teacher was looking at
us. She asked us why we were talking in the lesson. My friend said,
‘Teacher, she can’t understand Cantonese.’ Then my teacher asked all
my classmates if they could understand Cantonese. Almost all of them
said ‘No’. Therefore, we had a Putonghua lesson together. I found out
later that many of my classmates were also from Mainland China so
Cantonese was not their first language.

Now I have studied in this school for
six years, and I can understand Cantonese
very well. I will never forget that first day in
this primary school and I am still thankful for
my first class teacher.
