Environmental Education
In view of an increasing global concern about environmental conservation, our school has
spared no effort in promoting environmental education. The Environmental Education
Committee was set up in 1996 and is responsible for formulating, coordinating and promoting
the school’s environmental policy. The recruitment of student committee members since 1998
has enabled students to take an active role in the implementation of environmental education
programmes in school. Besides, Environmental Protection Ambassadors are appointed in
each class to promote energy saving and resource conservation.
Environmental Education in our school is delivered in a cross-disciplinary manner. Students
acquire environmental knowledge through the formal curricula of subjects like Biology,
Chemistry, Geography, Integrated Science and Liberal Studies. Coupled with subject-based
learning, a wide variety of activities have been organized. These include tree and flower
planting, vegetable growing, the Most Environmentally Friendly Classroom Competitions and
Environmental Carnivals, etc. Talks and workshops on themes like global warming, marine
conservation, energy saving and waste management have also been held. Beyond the school
campus, there are visits to the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, the Electrical and
Mechanical Services Department and Shatin Community Green Station, etc. All these help
enrich students’ learning experience and consolidate what they have learnt in lessons.
YEARS OF EXCELLENCE With the grants of more than HK$330,000 allocated by the Environment and Conservation
Fund and the Quality Education Fund, a Green School Campus including Plants Gallery,
Nature Corner, a greenhouse and a fish pond was set up. There was also an installation of
40 energy-saving facilities such as solar panels, food decomposer, Grade 1 air conditioners
and LED tubes in our school. All these provide students with an ideal environment to learn
actively and vibrantly as well as to relax in a pleasant environment.
Our school has participated in activities held by government bodies and community
organizations. We have joined the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme
organized by the Environmental Campaign Committee for years. The territory-wide
environmental activities like Green Christmas, Lights-out, Earth Hour and No Air-Con
Night, etc. allow a whole-school participation and the practice of environmental protection
in students’ daily life. In addition, students were nominated to join the Eco-guide Training
Programme held by the Environmental Protection Department. After completing the
programme, students were appointed as Earth Hour Ambassadors who organized activities
like ‘One Earth Mission’ in school and delivered green messages to their schoolmates.
Our students have joined various open competitions including Student Environmental
Reporter Competition, Environmental Household Gear Design Competition, Environmental
Fashion Design Competition and Low-carbon Lifestyle Design Competition, etc. In 2009,
th
our school was awarded the Championship of the 7 Hong Kong Green School Award.
Championship and two Merit Awards of the Greening School Project Award were awarded in
2010, 2011 and 2013 respectively.
