          The Lord is my light

                                                   Dr Yim Chi Shing

During my recent trip to the UK with a couple of teachers, we attended
some education and technology exhibitions and visited the University
of Oxford, a notable alumnus of which is a Japanese scholar called
Dr Okada Akito. In his book ‘100 Life Lessons from Oxford for Changing
Yourself’, Dr Akito talked about an English theoretical physicist and
cosmologist, Stephen Hawking, who died recently in March 2018 and who
was also an alumnus of the university.

In Dr Okada Akito’s articles ‘Looking Up to the Stars’ and ‘Patience – the
Mother of Success and Self-confidence’, he mentioned that Hawking’s
illness had gradually paralyzed him over the years. However, despite
his problems of paralyzed muscles, loss of speech and difficulties in
breathing, Hawking had overcome all these adversities, continued his
intense devotion to research and made great achievements academically.

Hawking reminded us that one must not give up, but keep one’s patience
          – looking up to the stars, concentrating on work and studies, strengthening
one’s character with perseverance and overcoming adversities. From this,
Dr Akito quoted Romans 5: 3-4, the words he heard from the Principal of
the University of Oxford during the opening ceremony:

(NIV version) “Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because
          we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character;
          and character, hope.”
Visit to Park High School, U.K.
The Scripture reminds us to think about the purpose of perseverance
when facing adversities. We must be prepared at any time so that we can grasp the opportunities when they come. Patience is
the power to encourage yourself to practise what you have learned to achieve life goals so that you are able to help and inspire
others and yourself with your hope for the future.

It matches perfectly the motto of the University
of Oxford and the opening words of Psalm 27:1,
meaning The Lord is my light. No doubt, it also
matches our school motto closely, “All for One,
One for All” and “Light and Life”. Remember to
love and serve others in need. Study hard to
better equip yourself to enjoy your school life
at the same time. I am sure that it is essential
and valuable to grow up during the process.
Be patient and persistent. Learning to be good
citizens who will contribute to society in future
                                                                        should be your ultimate goal.

A beautiful scene in the University of Oxford Let there be light.
