Blessing in Disguise
5A Ling Chi Hang Jana
One day, when I was watching television on the couch, my mom dashed out from the bathroom happily.
She told me she was going to have a baby. I got really excited and couldn’t sleep all night. When I was thinking
about having a younger brother or sister excitedly in my bed, I also prayed that the baby would be born
healthily and there would be no conditions, or Mom would need to take care of him or her even more.
The day finally arrived and I was going to meet my baby sister. She was so adorable but I was timid
to hold her in my hands. I was afraid that I would hurt her by accident. A year passed and we had noticed
something unusual about my baby sister. We took her for several checks and at last a doctor told us that the
baby had autism. My mom was not too surprised and she still looked very calm. I whispered to her, “The baby
has autism, then you’ll need to take care of her with at least twice amount the effort you spent on me.” My mom
replied, “Autism is not a disability. It is just another way of learning.” Few months passed, the baby seemed to
be more and more demanding as she grew. She always cried and my mom was busy just trying to feed her.
I helped with the chores around the house. It was quite hectic for the entire family and we were all physically
drained.
However, I found out that my sister could do a lot of math problems. I was surprised because I didn’t know
that a person with autism could actually be smarter than me. Over time, our relationship got better and our
bond was stronger. Now, we do everything together. We play volleyball and draw pictures together all the time.
She even helps me with my math homework sometimes. Like what Mom told me few years ago, “Autism is not
a disability. It is just a different way of learning.” I’m very glad that my sister shines in her strengths and she
can even help me improve. She is such a precious gem to me!
