               Actions Speak Louder Than Words

                                                 6D Ng Hoi Ching

Actions speak louder than words. Do you agree? Well, I do. Do you want to know why? Let’s find out.

So when I was in Primary Four, my friend came to my desk. “Valeria, can I borrow money from you
please? I ran out of correction paper and want to buy some. Sadly, I left my wallet at home. Please?” Seeing
her upset face, I agreed to lend her money. But I made her promise me one thing – she had to return the
money to me the next day.

And so, on the next day, I ran up to her and asked, “Remember our promise? Please give me the money
now as I need it to buy lunch today.” She said, “I…sorry…I forgot. I will give it to you next week. Ok?” Well, I
literally didn’t know that she was lying to me, so I just said, “Sure.”
Obviously, she did not give me back the money the following week and hid from me. I thought she was
just busy so I waited. A week turned into a month, and then turned into a year.

One day in Primary Five, I had had enough and confronted her in the corridor. “Hey! Remember our
promise? You’re a liar! Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and now it has been a year. Do you think
this is fair to me, huh?! Actions speak louder than words! Don’t you know that?” She seemed shocked, but
after thinking about it, I ended with, “Ugh! I’m just wasting my time,” and walked off.

We had not contacted each other for a year. But one day, suddenly, I got a letter in my mailbox. It was
sent from England. Who would write to me? I was confused so I took out the letter, and it was a letter from my
friend, with the money which she had owed me. I was happy to see that she had changed and become a better
       person!
       Dear Valeria,

Hey, sorry for breaking the promise we made. I knew you would be mad at me that day. After our
conversation, I found out so much about myself. I am so sorry for my actions! You are so right – actions speak
louder than words. Here’s the money which I owe you.

           Good luck in school!
                                                                                                        Your friend
