Northcote College Possessed the First Trampoline
in Hong Kong Educational Institutes
Lee Chuen Yan Nelson (1959 NCE Alumnus)
I was privileged to have been asked by Mr KOO Hok Chun, Dennis, the
Chairman of N.C.E.P.S.A. in 2021, to write a few lines from my memories when I
served as a P.E. Lecturer there in 1961-63, 1970-74 and 1980-88.
I was posted to Northcote College in 1962, serving as a P.E. Lecturer with Mr.
KAN Wing Kay, David, as the P.E. Head, and a female P.E. Lecturer, Miss HO Mo-
fun, Fanny. We were all P.E. graduates of Northcote College.
At that time, there was, in the P.E. Store, a large crate containing parts of a new
un-assembled Trampoline. It was an “old” model.
One day in early summer, 1962, Mr. Kan and I opened the crate, examined
the parts and assembled them to become a Trampoline. Without much knowledge
and skills of Trampolining, we relied on our Gymnastic Skills and tried a few
movements, like Vertical Bounce, Knees Drop, Seat Drop, Hands and Knees Drop,
and Half Twist. When one of us was practicing, the other one of us stood in front of
him on the floor, spotting the performer.
Gradually, we attempted to introduce these skills to our P.E. Students, with
them helping to spot each other, with at least one spotter at each side and end of the
Trampoline, and they took turns to practise.
In 1962, Mr Kan left Northcote College for P.E. further Training in Chester,
England. His post was replaced by Mr LEUNG Hang (deceased), as the P.E.
Head. He returned to Hong Kong after P.E. further training at Exeter College,
Exeter, England. He had knowledge and training of Trampolining, and taught
me and our P.E. Students the skills. Sometimes, even Lecturers of other Subjects
came to the P.E. Department and tried bouncing on the Trampoline for fun. Other
