HAPPY MEMORIES OF NCE
Louise Kam Sau Ling (1954 NCE Alumna)
I was in NCE 67 years ago. This indeed is worthy of thanksgiving especially so
many of our classmates have already gone ahead of us to another abode. May they all
rest in peace.
I was late joining NCE. I remember the entrance examination was oral English
consisting of a sheet of paper with a list of names. Two names remain in my
memory. They were: "Rose, Rose I love you" and Caroline Hill Road". It was quite a
challenging entrance exam.
In the Domestic Science class, we were five altogether. One time we were
assigned to prepare a Chinese meal. My four classmates did wonders, and my job was
to prepare boiling water. Actually that was the first time I ever boiled water! Since
them, I have found cooking a relaxing hobby. My favourite pastime is doing tuna
salad with roasted oatmeal as a base, and making homemade Baileys’ cream, to the
delight of many of my friends.
My first year on probation teaching was at St. Mary’s where I was assigned to
be the form teacher of F. 2A. I thoroughly enjoyed my international class. It was
while there that I found my religious vocation as a Good Shepherd Sister. Opposite
to St. Mary’s and off the railroad track was a residential school for teenage girls with
personal and family problems. I was attracted to it because of its special dedication to
needy girls. I got permission to finish my teacher-on-probation in Pelletier School.
Pelletier School is named after the foundress of the Good Shepherd Sisters,
an international religious congregation founded by St. Mary Euphrasia Pelletier in
Angers, France in 1835. We honour our Foundress by naming our school using her
family name "Pelletier". Our motto is “A PERSON IS MORE VALUABLE THAN
THE WHOLE WORLD”.
