P.1-2 School-based English P.1
Language Curriculum
In 2018, we introduced a new school-based
English P.1 English curriculum. The learning
modules are based on reading—for example,
one of the modules is animals. There are
two books selected, namely, Animals Can
Move and Pond Life. Through reading and
supplementary exercises, students learn
vocabulary on animals and verbs about their
movements.

This year, our school has joined the PEEGS
(Promoting Effective English Language Learning in Primary Schools) scheme. One of our objectives
is to promote Reading Across Curriculum (RaC). Therefore, we worked with the Science department
in December, 2019. Both English and G.S. teachers taught the topic at the same time as our goal
was to enrich students’ vocabulary on the topic ‘animals’. In addition to reading the books selected,
we arranged a field trip to Ocean Park. The teachers involved designed a field trip booklet, helping
students to learn more about animals, specifically on monkey, wallaby, kookaburra and koala.
Through observations, students had to identify the animals’ appearance and characteristics.

For extension, students
completed a composition
during English lessons.
They had to write sentences to describe the
animals. Here is an example:
Southern Koala
1. I can see a Southern Koala in Ocean Park.
2. It is small and fat. It is grey, white and black.
3. It has limbs, fur, claws and a tail.
4. It lives on the tree.
5. It eats leaves.
6. It can walk, crawl, climb and sleep all day.
