e-LEARNING IN ENGLISH LESSONS
Amazon Kindle & Apple TV pilot
Mainland recent arrivals were treated to a language arts course which included
nursery rhymes, Christmas carols, poetry, limericks and cartoons before
piloting the use of Amazon Kindle eBook and immersion reading technologies.
This allowed students to read the classic American children’s story, Charlotte’s
Web by E. B. White with synched dictionaries as well as a professionally
narrated Audible companion audiobook with real-time highlighting of words
as they are read aloud. Finally, students got to watch sections of the 2006
Charlotte’s Web movie on Apple TV enhancing their ability to face school-
based assessments (SBA) in both print and film later on, and whetting their
appetite to finish reading and watching this classic during their summer
vacations.

BUILDING LEARNER AUTONOMY
Special Saturday English Course
Additional English lessons have been held for recent arrivals from Mainland
China on Saturdays. These have placed students in English proficiency
level based groupings for either remedial support or extension. In addition
to developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills students have
been encouraged to develop greater learner autonomy by developing their
dictionary skills.
