The Australian excursion for me proved the truth of the
saying that “time flies when you are having fun”! I had
heard lots of people say that Australia was a beautiful
and fantastic place and even heard a presentation from
students who had gone on the previous Dungog excursion
but even this didn’t prepare for the stunning natural
beauty of Australia’s urban and rural landscapes. My
homestay family taught me about Australian history,
traditional customs and food. I learned how to throw a
boomerang, make a pancake and lots about native Australian
animals’ habitats. Unsurprisingly, through participating
in such fun activities my spoken English improved a lot
during my time in Dungog. I am very thankful that I was
chosen for this overseas school placement and homestay
programme.

How better to learn about English native speakers’
language and culture than a homestay and school
placement in rural Australia? I can tell you, there is no
better way. The people of Dungog are amazing hosts and
my homestay family was just wonderful arranging all kinds
of activities for us, including watching the stars in the
night sky, playing football and riding horses. And of course,
this country hospitality extended to the vivacious and
friendly students of Dungog High School. Indeed, I learned
a lot from them and their more relaxed relationships with
their teachers. And, I will never forget my time in Sydney
before and after the week in Dungog. What a vibrant and
picturesque city with its glorious harbour, Opera House and
Harbour Bridge with its high-rise skyscrapers standing in
stark contrast to its grand Victorian architecture such
as the Queen Victoria Building. This excursion really
broadened my horizons!
