Crossroads
Those of us who participated in this journey, did so
because we each had a dream to make the world a
better place and to help people in need. The journey
was thrilling and very much emotional for some of
us. We experienced the lives of others with such
disadvantages compared to our own; blindness,
AIDS, living in slums, losing money every year
without any choice. Our first day on the job was
working at Soap Cycling, an independent non-profit
organization completely run by volunteers that took
used soap from hotels all across the Asia region and
made it usable once more.
At the foundation they collected clothes, electronics,
furniture, all items donated by people, families, stores
and even schools like ours. Our jobs varied between
departments, from cleaning warehouses to building
furniture or packaging certain items and shipping
them off to countries in need. After all the work had
been done before lunch, we moved on to simulations
or “X-periences” as they were named where we truly
saw and experienced how others had to live and
make do with their lives. It was truly a powerful and
moving experience for all of us, and I am sure none
of us who participated will be forgetting it anytime
soon.
