Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my view about whether we should do virtual sports or real sports.
Virtual sports have become more popular and more people rely on them to keep fit. In my
opinion, real sports are more valuable and cannot be replaced.
First of all, playing virtual sports lack human interaction. In team games, like football or
tennis, you can see the expressions and actions of the other players clearly in real time. You
can learn their sports skills. You can also enlarge your social circle. However, the cooperation
in virtual games is limited. Your opponents or teammates are often computer-generated
characters whose actions are mimicked on the screen by a virtual figure. This puts a distance
between people, taking the human element out of sports. The game developers may give
you a promising result so you can easily win the game but it makes lower challenge and fun in
virtual sport that you cannot completely enjoy playing sports.
Furthermore, the actual feeling and experience in virtual sports and real sports are totally
different so they can hardly be compared. Imagine going windsurfing on the blue and beautiful
ocean, the sweat running down your face and breathing the fresh air. At that moment, your
stress is gone. Can you imagine playing outdoor sports at home now? The extent of body
movement is only limited to jump and swing your hands forward and backward. Spending a
long time playing virtual sports is harmful to our eyes because the bright light released by the
television hurts our eyes.
Although some people said that playing virtual sports is more convenient that you can
do anytime you want at home. But in real sports, it gives you real and strong power release
and keeps you healthy. On the other hand, we cannot burn many calories while doing virtual
sports. While exercising, endorphins will be produced to make you feel happy. Real sports
can change physical to mental happiness. Therefore, the health benefits of playing virtual
sports will be less significant. In fact, if people take the false sense of security from virtual
sports as a license to indulge in smoking, the result may actually be detrimental to health.
In conclusion, the existence of virtual sports has changed the way how people do sports.
I believe that real sports have their merits and benefits which cannot be replaced by virtual
sports. They can help you develop a healthy lifestyle and excel yourself.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Wong
