The ‘Suicide Squad’ of Hong Kong
S.5 The Champion 5A (32) Lee Yuet Sing
This is not a review of a super hero movie. This is not something that we
are happy to learn about. This arti cle is about the worrying trend of the
increasing rate of teen suicides in Hong Kong.
The thing that leads to the problem
the most is no doubt the low level of
happiness of students. The figure has
been dropping from the top of the roof,
and sadly, so do the teenagers.
Why are teens not happy with their current lives? There are
multi ple reasons and let me explain them to you one by one.
First of all, students are suffering from heavy school stress. It is unfortunate to realize that the
infi nite amount of school work is the most suff ocati ng thing for students. Not having a sounding
qualification, young people will not be able to find a high paid job and the unemployed ones
cannot even make their ends meet. When they can’t handle the stress, they might end up
committi ng suicide.
Another reason for teen suicide is having unachievable dreams in their lives.
In other countries like the USA and UK, you could chase after your dream.
For instance if you like basketball, you could be a basketball player or a coach
when you grow up. While in Hong Kong, the chance of doing that is minimal.
Nevertheless, the salaries of these dream jobs are not att racti ve anyhow.
The above are the two most common reasons why students are having
suicidal thoughts. Let me suggest two ways to alleviate the stress on
young people in Hong Kong.
As we all can see, school stress is a big reason for students committi ng
suicide. So, here are some suggesti ons on how to deal with stress and
negati ve thoughts.
Avoid thinking about your problems and indulging yourself in it endlessly. Things will not turn out
bett er if you think desperately about them. Why not just do something else and forget about it.
Someti mes, there is nothing we can do and we’d bett er accept the reality and keep our heads up
high.
Studying in a college is never a must in your life. You can sti ll have a bright future and earn your
big fortune without a degree. Take Steve Jobs who didn’t even fi nish his degree as an example. He
became rich and successful through lots and lots of hard work. So don’t give up on your precious
life so easily. The opportuniti es of life are beyond your imaginati on. To be
frank, I encourage you all to go for your dream enthusiasti cally. Just do
whatever you dream of. Go for it!
We only live once.
That’s why we should treasure our life. Everything is possible as long
as we live. Don’t let your dream be merely a dream. There might be so
many hurdles in life, as we keep moving on, success will come at last.
