     Goodbye, My Lover

There was once a married couple who loved each other to the moon and back. They were a perfect couple. However,
they would fight every once in a while… about who loved the other more. People were envious; but they were indifferent-
they knew people would not understand.
One day, the husband told his wife that if she could last one week without him, he would hand over his entire life’s
savings and possessions to her. The wife, finding this rather amusing, thought that one week was far too easy, and
accepted the challenge playfully. He booked her into an exquisite luxurious hotel and she turned off all the notifications on
her phone related to him, even going as far as to rid her home screen of their wedding photo.
At first, she was fine. She went about her day as usual. However, after a day, her heart started to feel heavy, and a
faint but lingering sense of sorrow started to develop. Few days passed and it became unbearable. She wasn’t used to
waking up to the cold morning drafts instead of her husband’s warm hugs. Going a whole day without hearing the words
“I love you” was foreign to her. And most of all she wasn’t used to being alone. She started to question why he had asked
her to spend a week without him, and was starting to regret making the deal with him. She thought it must be an exercise
to strengthen their relationship, to help take their love to a higher level.
She did not know then but she had been right.
Finally, the day came she was due home. She packed up her things. Her stay was relaxing, but she longed for his
touch. Her bags were packed, and as she made her way to the door, the doorbell rang. It was a group of her husband’s
friends. They looked serious. Sombre. They sat her down and informed her that her husband’s time had come last night.
He had been sick for months, but loved her too much to make her worry. He had known he had cancer for months, and
knew what it would do to his body, especially in the final week. It would be ugly and tough, and no loved one should suffer
through seeing that, most of all the person whom he had loved the most.
They took out his will. As promised, all of his life savings were signed for her. His car, his house, everything he owned
       was in her name now.
           She had won the wager.
           Attached was also a letter:
          “Love,
Well done! You’ve spent a week without me. I’ve always believed you were the strongest woman I know.
Until we meet again, live life to the fullest. Think of me when you can. I will forever be with you.
I love you to the moon and back.
           Your Faithful Husband
           P.S. I love you more.
