Story Monster Writing Workshop
The idea of writing about a monster is always a popular topic that gets students excited to start writing
stories. When the host of the writing workshop, SCOLAR, offered this opportunity at the Cultural Centre on
th
24 October, our students’ imaginations ran wild.
The P5 English Enhancement students reclined on the floor to discuss what monsters
they would like to draw. They came up with all sorts of creative and ingenious ideas.
Perhaps they were excited with Halloween just around the corner. They talked, giggled
and traced the outline of their monsters.
After drawing, came the descriptive part of their creations. One group wrote about
an insect-faced monster that puffed at smelly odours. Next was the upside-down
double-faced monster with multiple eyes; while another was a glowing beady-eyed
monster with razor-end claws. When Milton’s group introduced their greedy earthly
monster named “Loh Yeh Moh Yeh”, the audience erupted in laughter. The students
from other schools repeated its name delightfully and could not contain their
laughter every time the host mentioned its weird name. There were many games
and votes concerning the various monster creations.
To sum up, all of our students enjoyed the pleasurable activities in the
workshop. They were confident in expressing themselves using both written and
spoken English. It was a wonderful experience that allowed them to practise and
enhance their writing skills in such an entertaining way.
Here is some of the feedback and a close-up of their creations.

I felt excited on the way to the workshop
because I didn’t know what it was going to be
like. I thought it was amazing when the workshop
started. It was a lot of fun. I loved it very much.

I think that the monsters are really cute. I like
the King-squitopus the most. The story monster
workshop was really great. I hope I can have
more chances to join similar workshops in the
future.
