Personal, Social and Humanities Education
As Steve Jobs said, “It’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities,
that yields us the results that make our hearts sing.” With the expansion of the creative
economy worldwide, Hong Kong needs creative talents equipped with a broad vision,
sharp discernment, and sound understanding in history, culture, the economy as well as the
environment.
While studying Personal, Social and Humanities Education (PSHE) subjects offered in our
school, namely Chinese History, History, Economics and Geography, students are encouraged
to develop their own views and opinions. In the humanities classes, our students discuss,
interpret and communicate complex ideas. Diversified learning and teaching methods such
as discovery learning, group discussion, peer learning, video watching, games, role plays
and e-Learning have been adopted to align with the school’s major concerns of catering
for learners’ diversities and enhancing learning effectiveness. Besides classroom learning,
our students visit museums, environmental resource centres and commercial firms, go on
exchange tours to Mainland China and Taiwan, run Chinese New Year Fair stalls, work with
social enterprises, join programmes offered by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education
and participate in territory-wide competitions. By taking learning beyond the classroom, the
linkage between classroom learning and social reality is strengthened and our students are
YEARS OF EXCELLENCE provided opportunities to observe and experience social dynamics.
As the educational context keeps changing, our PSHE teachers, who are veterans with
expertise in the subjects, have spared no effort in practising lifelong learning and pursuing
40 continuing professional development. Experience sharing sessions are held regularly among
PSHE teachers, teachers of other Key Learning Areas (KLAs), professionals and co-workers
in the field. These include conducting lesson observation and sharing, joining subject-
based pilot scheme, launching learning study, serving as teacher trainers, speakers of sharing
sessions and markers of public examinations. We also joined university support projects
and programmes such as the Quality School Improvement Project organized by the Chinese
University of Hong Kong to seek professional advice on effective learning and teaching
strategies and participate actively in seminars, workshops and training courses organized by
the school, the Education Bureau and local universities.
With a team of dedicated and professional PSHE teachers as well as the concerted efforts of
both teachers and students, fruitful attainments have been achieved. Since the first HKDSE
Examination in 2012, our students have attained a 100% passing rate in humanities subjects
throughout the years, with an average of more than 70% of students attaining level 4 or above,
which almost doubles that of overall Hong Kong average. In addition, our students have
been within the top 50% value-added performance in PSHE from 2012 to 2017 and the top
10% in some years. The successful implementation of PSHE KLA in our school is reflected
by not only the outstanding public examination results but also the numerous prizes students
have won in various inter-school competitions. For example, our students were elected as
the Geoconservation Ambassadors and joined a study tour to Hainan. Besides, they received
