Liberal Studies
Liberal Studies (LS) aims to enhance students’ understanding of issues on personal
development, their society and culture, the human world and the natural environment. It
enables students to develop multiple perspectives on various issues, and to develop in students
a range of lifelong learning skills. Our school has introduced LS in both junior and senior
forms for years. School-based curriculum is adopted for junior levels to prepare students for
studying the senior LS curriculum.
Whole-school Moral Education and LS discussion sessions are conducted in order to provide
students with opportunities to discuss social issues regularly and to cultivate their high-order
thinking and presentation skills. Moreover, English and Chinese articles, vocabulary lists of
social issues, English and Putonghua audio learning materials are developed so as to enhance
students’ ability to discuss social issues biliterately and trilingually.
Different activities such as Liberal Studies and Humanities Week and talks on current affairs
are held every year to broaden students’ knowledge base and enhance their social awareness.
In order to promote self-directed learning, cross-curricular project learning is introduced in
junior forms. Through adopting an issue-enquiry approach, applying thinking strategies,
participating in cross-curricular learning activities, having group discussions and giving
YEARS OF EXCELLENCE presentations, students can lay a solid foundation for developing multiple perspectives on
social issues and conducting the Independent Enquiry Studies at senior forms.
An online platform ‘Learning Liberal Studies in English’ is developed to provide reading
40 materials and exercises covering different levels of difficulty. Students can therefore learn
according to their own learning progress and abilities. This helps to cater for learner diversity.
Electronic devices and various e-learning tools such as Google Classroom are also introduced
to facilitate classroom teaching as well as self-directed learning outside of the classroom.
Our LS teachers have completed master’s degree courses or related programmes in LS
teaching. Moreover, they participate continuously in professional development seminars and
workshops on subject teaching, catering for learning diversities and e-Learning in order to
optimize teaching and learning effectiveness.
The Education Bureau (EDB) recognizes our teachers’ professional competencies. Our LS
teacher has been invited by the EDB to serve as a teacher trainer of workshops, a developer
of teaching and learning materials as well as the District Coordinator to provide support and
advice on LS teaching and assessment to teachers of other schools.
Outstanding HKDSE Examination results have been attained in LS over the years. In 2018,
100% of our students got level 2 or above, which was significantly higher than the overall
Hong Kong average.
