We had got far busier after the success in election. We faced multiple practical difficulties when
we began to implement the seemingly flawless plans. Yet as said, I was lucky to have my friends
striving together. We stayed in the Union office devising solutions till 8 to 9 p.m. almost every
weekday, and we still had to squeeze time for revision! It came as no surprise I nearly failed my
Physics and Chinese Language examinations in the first term. So I learnt quite a bitter lesson in
               time management in those days.

The two years of pre-college life was so fruitful and full of joy, thanks to my dearest friends and
teachers. We devoted all our time and passion to running the Students’ Union, playing hard and
studying crazily before setting off for different paths after graduation.

After completing training in medical school, I started my career as a pediatrician in 2013. Life
was no longer about examinations or marks, but ‘Life’ per se. Working in the NICU (intensive
care unit of newborn), I have been taking care of numerous premature babies. In this place where
doctors see more deaths than lives, I have learnt to stay humble. I still remember those sleepless
nights, when my colleagues and I struggled till dawn to finally save the babies; when we lost
difficult battles in the resuscitation area while parents were shedding tears outside. I still remember
those tough couples, who showed tremendous courage accompanying their babies through the

YEARS OF EXCELLENCE stormy periods; who decided to let go of the long-suffered little lives when conditions went
beyond salvage. What frontline medical practice teaches me is not merely how to treat diseases,
but also how to communicate with patients and their families, collaborate with various medical
professionals, accept and learn from failures of my own and others.
40 Life is not a matter of how long we live, or how high we climb but how we bounce when we fall.

For sure, doubts, challenges and frustrations are inevitable in any stage of life. It is, however, the
experience that has shaped us and made us tougher.
