A Great Doctor:

Joanna TSE Yuen Man

Dr Joanna TSE Yuen Man was born in Hong
Kong in 1968. She was graduated from the
Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1992 and
was appointed Medical Officer to Tuen Mun
Hospital after her internship. Dr Joanna Tse
Yuen-man, a 35-year-old respiratory physician,
was the first public hospital doctor died from
SARS in 2003. Her death caused an outpouring
of public emotion in Hong Kong.
Many people were infected and died at the
time of the outbreak of SARS in Hong Kong.
The most severe outbreak of SARS was in the housing estate in Kowloon called Amoy
Garden. Dr Tse was the fi rst doctor who volunteered to work in the SARS ward in Tuen
Mun Hospital. She contracted SARS when she took care of the SARS patients. She
continued helping her patients until her body wasn’t capable of doing so.

The people of Hong Kong see Dr. Tse as a heroine. Today she is still remembered
in the hearts of many Hong Kong people although she died nearly thirteen years
ago! Dr Tse was a brave and professional doctor who had served the community
wholeheartedly. Her devotion to the society is always remembered by everyone.
