Farewell to teachers
Farewell SSC!
I was a backpacker traveller when I came to SSC to It’s hard to believe that I
fill a casual vacancy in March 1996. It was a temporary have had the privilege of living

I have often been more recognized teaching at St. Stephen’s and
as a gardener than a teacher, and could Tivo and I will miss this campus
be remembered as a teacher who and the friends we have made
tended a garden – from the plot next here. See you again somewhere
to the staffroom, to the lawn at Central sometime!

Through 22 years of service in SSC, I have maintained
one doctrine I picked up when I was a trainee teacher in IE,
Singapore in 1981. In its simplest way, the principle is ‘if If sakura thrives
there is no learning, there is no teaching’. Another guideline in SSC, SSCians
I follow for teaching is based on a very Confucian idea related will excel in
to education – impart knowledge according to students Hong Kong
targeted.
These two simple credos shaped my lesson preparation, customizing my
teaching materials, designing assessments and even marking. My students’
learning was only part of the equation; my learning to teach day in day out is
equally important.
Teaching is parallel to gardening. I have to know my seeds before I sow,
adjust the amount of water, sunshine and type of soil to suit a sapling to grow
into a tree with prolific blossoms and mellow fruitfulness.
SSC allows me to enjoy the best of both worlds: interacting with young
people to stay young, and cultivating a plot of land to create beautification with
foliage, flowers, fruit and fragrance.
