I come from the Netherlands, where Dutch is spoken there. The
Netherlands is a very fl at country. The highest mountain there
is like 200 meteres tall. There are almost no tall buildings.
Most of the people live in a house. The weather there is much
colder, with the hottest days of the year are 20 to 25 degrees in
summer while the coldest days are 0 to 5 degrees on average.
My Host Family Many of you may wonder why I decided to go to Hong Kong.
Having been studying in a Dutch secondary school, I thought, ‘I
don’t want to do exactly the same for another two years. Go to
the same school with the same teachers with the same friends
and the same kind of homework. I don’t want to become like
everyone else. I want to do something completely different.
Something special.’ So because of that, I decided to go to
Hong Kong.
Ski in Italy Sri Lanka Victoria Harbour So why was Hong Kong my number one destination? First
of all, I really like the Asian culture, so I wanted to be in a
country in Asia. Secondly, I wanted to go to a place where they
can speak a bit English, and in the third place, I wanted to go
to live in a city, not on some farm in the middle of nowhere. So
that’s why I chose Hong Kong as my number one destination.
When I first arrived in Hong Kong, I thought it was very
interesting. My first impression was very positive. When
I arrived at the airport, I immediately made friends with
Japan Malaysia with my family exchange students from different countries. A boy from
Belgium and one from Finland. On the way to my host family,
I could see skyscrapers in the city. In contrast, there are almost
no tall buildings in the Netherlands.
Now, I stay in a host family in Yuen Long, where I will stay for
one year. In the host family, I have parents and one sister, who
is 19 years old and studies at Hong Kong University. They are
very nice to me. I can speak English with them.
There are so many different things but at the same time there
are still so many similarities to my home country. The people
look different; the food is different; the buildings are different.
But at the same time, I can still speak to the people, they can
English Day With my host sister understand me. With many different things, I can learn a lot
of new things. Learn about a new culture, a new language,
and get to know a lot of many new people. I think exchange
programs are very important because exchange programs help
people to learn understanding people from different countries
and cultures. When the people on this planet are able to
understand one another there is a smaller chance that confl icts
will occur. So if we want to live in a peaceful world, we fi rst
have to learn to understand one another. And that is what
exchange programs stimulate.
