Developing Self-directed Learning in the P1

‘Space Town’ Literacy Programme at CRGPS

All children are unique. Some children like to work in large groups while others prefer to work
independently. Some students have had exposure to the English language since they were born while
others are only just being exposed to phonics, vocabulary and sentence structures. During English
lessons, students that need more guidance can sit together with a teacher dedicated to guiding them with
their work whilst others can work on more challenging worksheets independently.
In September 2015, we introduced ‘Self-directed Learning (SDL)’ into the P1 ‘Space Town’ English
lessons. The SDL Activity Booklet gives students the opportunity to practice using the vocabulary and
sentence structures taught through writing sentences for high frequency words, phonics activities,
word searches and small projects. Students also have the opportunity to play board games from each
unit. Additional worksheets are also available for students who love to write about their own drawings.
Students can choose what activities they want to do depending on their own interests and learning style.
SDL can be done during Space Town lessons, GE lessons, breaks or at home.
Students can also choose additional reading books that interest them from 1000 books divided into
21 ability levels. We are now introducing ‘See-saw’ which encourages students to create individual work
using iPads to photograph, edit and record themselves before submitting their work to the teacher via
          email.
This year, teachers have worked very hard to implement new methods to cater for learner diversity
and use technology to enhance the learning experience. It is so rewarding to see our students developing
a genuine love for learning by enthusiastically embracing the Self-directed Learning and E-learning
          initiatives.

Students enjoy the Space Town lesson very much.

Students participate actively in English activities with One of the most popular Self-directed Learning activities -
Mr. Stride. They are using iPads for reading stories, Board Games. They are available in the classroom so students
recording their voices and playing games. have the opportunity to play and learn with them at their free
