With this saying in mind, the English Department has
devoted its efforts to helping students grow into all-round
individuals.

6G Zain Ul Abbadin won the top prize in the Create My
Future Letter Writing Competition 2020 (organized by The
Hong Kong Education University) outshining other students Zain Ul Abbadin (6G), Winner of
from different schools in Hong Kong. Zain was awarded Create My Future Letter Writing
Competition 2020
a trophy, certificate and cash prize of $1000. In the letter,
he recounts his personal experience as a colored teenager in Hong Kong, particularly
highlighting the struggles faced by, not only him, but also many other ethnic minorities.
Fortunately, he gains a sense of belonging here and is grateful to be embraced by this
loving city.

Here is an excerpt from his letter.
As a coloured person in Hong Kong, the one thing I desire most is acceptance. Imagine a place
with no boundaries of race. A future with genuinely fair opportunities. A city where minorities no
longer form circles within themselves. This city currently faces a plethora of challenges which are
otherwise too sensitive to openly discuss. But the last thing I want is racial discrimination to become
one of them. Looking at the Black Lives Matter protests and all the injustice that are stemming from
the simple notion of having a different skin colour, it pains me when thinking about it. I worry that
I will soon face the same too. I want a society that truly respects people from all backgrounds and
race doesn’t divide us. A place where everyone grows up not worrying about what status their skin
colour puts them in.

To nurture independent-minded future leaders, the English Department has encouraged
students to gain global and local insights through debating. This year, our Debating Team
joined the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Public Speaking Contest 2020. 5B Nip
Cheuk Yiu was one of the top ten contestants in the session and was awarded a
certificate of good performance. 2B Oscar Cho Kwan Nok made it into the top eight in the
session and entered the District Semi-Finals.
