We visited Simonkallio Early Childhood
Education Center on 29 April 2019 and
were impressed by the educational beliefs
demonstrated there. Simonkallio was
founded in 2016. A key objective is to
promote children’s every child’s growth,
development, health and wellbeing in ways
that are age-and development-specific.
The teachers provide various ways for the kids to learn, for example, the forest group and
authentic environment. They use the natural environment in their teaching. The forest group goes
to the forest every day, even when it is cold or rainy. The daily two-hour outdoor activity provides
ample meaningful play time.
Playing is a very powerful way of motivating kids to learn. Play is often a full body activity that
helps them develop skills they will need later in life. Such activities as running, dancing, climbing
and rolling all foster muscle development and help
fine-tune motor skills.
