Did students in the old days need to attend school on Saturdays?
How many classes were there? Were there any special rooms?
Feeling curious? We have asked Ms Lau for all these unanswered
questions.
Ms Lau is our vice principal. She has taught for over thirty years.
She teaches English. She mentioned, ‘Canossa Primary School and
Canossa Primary School (San Po Kong) are very different in many
ways.’
In the old days, students were only required to attend school for
half a day. Therefore, students in Primary 4, 5 and 6 needed to
have lessons on alternate Saturdays and some of them needed to
stay at school afterwards for extra-curricular activities. We have
6 classes for each grade now but there were only 4 classes two
decades ago. The classrooms were rather ‘retro’. There weren’t any
sinks. Students did not have a chance to enjoy lessons with vivid
images shown on the projectors. Can you imagine that?

Karis: It is a special year since we are celebrating our school’s 50th birthday. We are delighted to have
Mr Chang answer some of our questions. Mr Chang has taught in our school for more than
twenty years. We are sure that he must have a lot of unforgettable memories teaching in our
school.
Khloe: Which subjects did you teach?
Mr Chang: I teach English and Religious Studies currently. But you would never believe that… I was a P.E.
teacher.
Karis: That’s news to me! Do you have any funny teaching experiences working here?
Mr Chang: Of course! Monitors needed to lock the classroom doors before the recess. I clearly remember
that there was a monitress who left the key inside a classroom and she asked me for help. I
needed to climb through the windows by the
corridor so as to enter the classroom and get the
key.
Khloe: How could that be? I would be frightened if I
left the key in the classroom.
Karis: Because of the outbreak of the flu, we needed to
start our Chinese New Year holidays a bit earlier
than it was planned. Have you ever faced any
emergency situations in the old days?
Mr Chang: Sure, I have. In 2003, there was an outbreak of
SARS and the government announced that all
schools had to be closed for almost a month.
There wasn’t any intranet so teachers needed to
send students their assignments by mail.
Khloe: The school was closed for almost a month!
Children must be bored at home…
