In the Year 2050
Kerry Li (3A)
“Laura, put down that phone. It’s dinner time!” Kerry said impatiently.
“But mum, it’s an emergency!” Laura explained.
“I don’t care! You can’t touch your phone until you finish your dinner!” said Kerry.
Laura rolled her eyes and finished her dinner as fast as she could. She went back to her room and told Kerry that she was going to
sleep. Then she locked her bedroom door and called her friend Ana. “Are you ready? Let’s party!”
Ana replied, “Yes! I have already placed a mattress under your window. Jump down and come to Foxglove in Icehouse Street. Be careful
and keep everything quiet. We’re breaking the lockdown!”
Laura looked out of the window and saw the mattress. She made sure that she had already locked the bedroom door and jumped out of
the window. She landed on the mattress and ran into an alley, darting in and out of the shadows to the Foxglove.
“It’s your round,” laughed Ana, holding her empty glass to Jacob. Jacob put the beers on the table and said, “you’re not going to believe
what I just heard at the bar.”
“Spit it out,” said Laura.
Jacob laughed. “The bartender just said there’s a crew of cannibals hunting people in this area.”
“That’s ridiculous! Are there giants and vampires too?” laughed Edward.
“It gets better,” Edward continued, “apparently they want to taste meat!”
“But no-one’s eaten meat since 2025!” Laura laughed.
“We’d better be careful on the way home Laura,” said Ana with a grin.
Icehouse Street was dark as they slipped through the shadows towards home…
“Laura, open up! I left my towel in your room!” said Kerry, knocking loudly. But no one was answering. Kerry soon realized that Laura had
broken the lockdown. She turned on her laptop and started tracking Laura’s movements. She noticed that Laura was moving from Icehouse
Street towards the abandoned zoo. And she was moving fast.
“Can you hear those footsteps?” whispered Ana.
“Yeah, there’s a crew of cannibals walking behind us,” laughed Jacob.
“Shut up. I’m serious!” Ana hissed.
“She’s right. See those shadows?” Edward exclaimed.
“Follow me!” Laura said, fumbling for her vibrating phone. “Mum! Thank God it’s you! We’re being chased!”
“I know. I’m tracking you on my screen. Those are cannibals. Didn’t you see the headline today? Now keep running to the old zoo. I’ll
meet you there.” Kerry grabbed her 3D printed weapon, a rope and her master key. She opened the door, ran through Kerry’s bedroom and
jumped out of the window to the mattress below, before sprinting off into the darkness. She ran to the abandoned zoo and saw her daughter
being chased by cannibals. “Hide in the greenhouse!” shouted Kerry and she caught the attention of the cannibals. She kept running and
trapped the cannibals in an empty cage. She locked the door and went back to the greenhouse.
“Sorry mum. I just wanted to have fun face-to-face with friends,” said Laura.
“It’s okay, I understand. I’m glad you’re safe. Let’s go home,” said Kerry and hugged her daughter.
