Living a unique year at the
opposite pole of the world had been the
best opportunity I could ever wish for Solène Gaillard (From France)
in my life for a 16-year-old girl. As I think Hi! I’m Solène Gaillard from France. I was an exchange
about it now, it feels as if I lived a parallel life, student at Leung Sing Tak College in the school year 2017-
a dream. I had been pushed in a completely different place, 2018.
with new people surrounding me on the streets, at school
and at home too. Those people soon became my family After my fabulous exchange program in Hong Kong,
and my friends by making me a part of their community. I enrolled in the school I used to study in France again. As
At school, as the first exchange student in Leung Sing Tak I had to repeat the previous grade, I didn’t know anyone
College’s history (in 2015-2016), I felt so delighted and in my class. However, I met a lot of amazing new people!
surrounded by so many teachers and students who helped My family also hosted an AFS exchange student from Hong
me and inspired me to live and learn in a different culture. Kong as I missed Hong Kong too much! :)
Back home in 2017, my high school and workload seemed After my exchange experience, I feel much more
so much easier to handle. I graduated in 2017 with a score confident and I am proud of what I have done. I have the
of 100/100, and now, in a few days, I will earn my bachelor feeling that I still have so many goals to pursue.
degree in International Economics and Management at I’m so thankful to my parents that they let me stay in
Bocconi University in Milan. By the way, let me share a fun Hong Kong for a year. I’m even prouder of them as I know
fact with you. I owe my degree to Mr Chik, my Economics that few parents let their kids go so far away from home.
teacher in Hong Kong and his “opportunity cost” teaching. They allowed me to discover so many things and they
In the year of my exchange, I felt as though I went on understood the importance of letting young people have
a roller coaster, where I had many conflicting feelings but more independence and experience in life. Moreover, I still
wished the ride never came to an end. That year made me owe a debt of gratitude to my host family that did so much
learn how to be introspective and independent. But mainly it for me.
taught me respect, whether it was towards a friend, a family After my year of exchange, I traveled
member, a culture or an object. Those principles are the around a bit. I plan to continue traveling
ones accompanying me for the rest of my life. as I love it so much. This September,
I cannot wait to come back to Hong Kong to retrieve I’m going to start my last year of high
that piece of my heart left there. However, for now, I will school. I’m working hard this year
continue my studies in Paris as I will be attending a master’s as I would like to be admitted to a
degree program in Fashion Management and wonder about medical university in future. I hope
my future trips among all the memorable highlights of that that everyone is doing okay in Hong Kong
precious year. even during this trying time.

          Chisa Mitsuyama (from Japan)

大家好!I’m Chisa Mitsuyama from Japan. I went to LSTC as an AFS exchange student last year (2019-2020).
Unfortunately, my exchange program was terminated due to COVID-19 and I came back to Japan last February. However,
the exchange was awesome, meaningful and unforgettable. I appreciate all of the teachers and schoolmates who supported me.
My exchange experience inspired me so much and will always motivate me to try anything I want. My journey to Hong Kong has
definitely changed my point of view and attitude. I’m sure that it will affect me in my future in a good way.
My plan for the coming future is to pass the entrance examination of a university where I want to enrol in. I have decided to
study politics. Why did I choose this discipline? It’s due to my experience in Hong Kong. I was often asked what I thought about
the social unrest in Hong Kong. However, regardless of my opinion, I’m not sure how to answer the question because I lack
knowledge about politics. That’s the main reason why I want to study politics. Also, I think it will help me to obtain
a lot of information about political issues around the world and learn to determine its truthfulness.
After I left Hong Kong, the pandemic became more serious around the world and quarantine began.
I didn’t know what was going to happen next and I was so nervous. Fortunately, in July, my high school
reopened. I was so delighted that I was able to see my friends. The first semester of my junior year was
really unusual. This summer holiday, which is the shortest one I have ever had, is almost over. The holiday
is unlike my planned one, as I can’t travel abroad to see my AFS friends, but it is still nice. I miss my life in
Hong Kong so much these days and I cannot believe that a year has passed already since I first visited Hong
Kong! Thank you all! I hope to see you all soon! 多謝你們!
