Parental Support
6C Andy Liu Yuk Hei
In the past, it was typical that in a great deal of families, only the father had to
go out for work and the mother could stay at home to look after their children. These
days, however, it is very likely that both parents have to work outside from morn
to dawn. Honestly, children in these families may have advantages from additional
income, but they may lack parental support at the same time.
Some people think that children may benefit
from the additional income because parents can
give the best to them such as the latest iPhones or
star tutorial classes, which can be quite expensive.
On the contrary, other people claim that these
children may feel that they are in lack of parental
support. Such children do not have enough
communication with their parents and parents do
not know how children feel or what they need.
Take my friend Peter as an example. He can only see his parents once a week
because his parents need to work in China during the week. When they come back
to Hong Kong at weekends, Peter always wants to share with them some delightful
experiences but they never listen to him due to their tiredness. What they know is
just to earn more money and give him what they think is the best. However, they do
not realise that better communication with him would instead be the best reward to
him. In fact, Peter commented that his parents’ absence was not good at all!
How about myself? My parents need to go for
work every day. My father is a bus driver and he only
worked during school hours since I was three years old.
The purpose of this was to have more time to play or to
communicate with me given that communication is the
most important between parents and children. I feel so
lucky because of this.
In conclusion, it is true that most parents need to
work outside but they should understand that the best
support to their children is to communicate with them more, rather than just giving
them as much money as they can.
