Strengthening Lifelong Learning Capabilities
As an integral part of the school curriculum, Life-wide Learning (LWL) complements
classroom learning and enables students to gain a variety of experiences that are essential
to foster their lifelong learning capabilities for achieving whole-person development. LWL
is important especially in preparing students for transition to post-secondary education and
employment.
LWL is carried out through various kinds of experiential learning organized by the school
through Other Learning Experiences (OLE). Since 2001, our school has implemented the
OLE Programme which aims to:
enable students to acquire the five essential learning experiences related to moral and
civic education, intellectual development, community service, physical and aesthetic
development as well as career-related experiences;
enrich, extend and enable student learning across various Key Learning Areas;
broaden students’ horizons and develop their lifelong interests and potentials;
build up students’ self-confidence and enhance their sense of responsibility;
foster students’ positive values and attitudes towards learning and life; and
help students learn to care for others and serve the community.
YEARS OF EXCELLENCE The OLE Programme is implemented in a whole-school approach with a close co-ordination
between the Extra-curricular Activities Committee, Academic Board and other functional
groups like the Moral and Sex Education Committee, Civic Education Committee,
Environmental Education Committee, Careers Guidance Committee and Students’ Union,
40 etc. The school also establishes good partnerships with government bodies and community
agencies which support LWL and OLE in school by providing diverse learning experiences,
facilities and financial assistance.
The OLE Programme is mainly conducted during the Life Education lessons every Friday.
There are over 60 clubs, societies, teams, service groups and students’ organizations providing
intellectual, artistic, athletic and interest-building activities as well as social service
opportunities for students. Guests and representatives of government bodies and community
organizations are invited to launch personal growth programmes and conduct talks, workshops
and experience sharing sessions, etc. on the five essential learning experiences. In addition to
the Life Education lessons, there are talent performances, house activities, training, practices
and services provided by clubs and societies, sports teams, uniform groups and service groups
during lunch time, after school, on weekends and during holidays. LWL and OLE activities
are also held on yearly and term bases such as school picnic, Swimming Gala, Athletics Meet,
Academic Weeks, Singing Contest, Christmas variety show, post-examination activities,
exchange programmes to Mainland China and Taiwan, overseas study tours, etc.
To facilitate students to pursue the goal of ‘One Student, One Sport, One Art and One
Service’, coaches and instructors are employed to provide professional training to students.
