Japan Historical and Culture Study Tour

It was a once in a lifetime experience. We were able to look at Japan’s
history from its feudal roots to their post-war reconstruction. Out of the many
places we visited, such as the former coal mine Gunkan Jima and Dutch port
Dejima, the Memorial at the Nagasaki Peace Park left the biggest impression for
me, we were fortunate enough to participate in the memorial of the atomic bomb
dropping on Nagasaki at the end of the Second World War. At the memorial
there were not enough seats to offer for all the pariticipants, so we had to stand
behind the seats. The atomic bombs have really scarred the Japanese people
that many still go to the park to remember the victims on that dreadful day. We
also went to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, looking at the photographs
of mutilated people and devastated buildings and the stories of innocent people
caught in the blast, it left a huge mark and made me think how warfare hurts not
only the belligerents fighting it, but the civilians behind them as well.
Many thanks to the School for organizing this trip!
